By defining the competencies required by those working in the evaluation field, SEVAL recognises evaluation as a profession and contributes to its professionalisation in Switzerland. Competencies are a means for promoting quality evaluations.
SEVAL has defined the required competencies for evaluators as well as for evaluation managers, (those managing evaluation contracts on behalf of the commissioner). This is to ensure that evaluations are useful and used effectively within their organisations. Having the competencies defined for evaluation managers is particularly useful as their role is often misunderstood, under-resourced and underestimated.

The Evaluation Competence Working Group addresses all issues related to the competencies of evaluators, evaluation managers and all others involved in evaluation projects.
